May 09, 2023

TRUMBULL, CT — Three teens accused of leaving a stolen car at the Trumbull Mall while they went shopping were arrested Monday, according to police.

In a news release, Police Lt. Brian Weir said an observant officer patrolling the mall parking lot Monday afternoon spotted an unoccupied vehicle with a broken window and the engine running.

Upon closer inspection, the Kia Optima was found to have a broken ignition with a USB cord inserted, which indicated it was stolen, Weir said. Officers confirmed the Kia had been stolen earlier that day from Stamford and began searching the area for a group of teens who had been seen leaving the car minutes earlier.

A short time later, police spotted the teens exiting the mall and detained them near a bus stop. One of the teens, a 17-year-old Stamford girl, acted aggressively toward police and had to be restrained, Weir said.
